CLIENT: HONDA
PROJECT: WHEEL COVER
For Honda we completed the product design stage of a new wheel-cover for cars manufactured in New Zealand. Work included 3D-CAD modeling for CAD-CAM tool design as well as the part design itself.
The 'form' of these covers is relatively simple. The designer's main challenge was to blend the surface junctions in a well-resolved manner.
CAD design was completed using early generation 'wireframe' CAD design techniques. CAD software's increasing sophistication has now made complex compound forms much easier to design.
After completing CAD design we designed the injection mold tooling itself. The material for cavities and core were executed in tooling grade aluminum. Aluminum was used for the mould to reduce the cost and time to tool. The volume of parts to be manufactured did not readily justify long-run tooling materials.
