CLIENT: AXIS SPORT LIMITED
PROJECT: X FLY HELMET
In this project for Axis, we completed a comprehensive design program that included all our departments. We completed product design for the helmet itself, graphic design for all point-of-sale material, and website design to generate a point of communication. Product design included initial modeling of the helmet in automotive clay at full scale. Clay was used as the surface is complex and the defining of form an onerous design task. Once the clay model was complete, and with a restricted budget, kiwo studio utilised traditional patternmaking. A wooden helmet master from which cavity and core castings could be made was used. Manufacturing and assembly timing was carefully examined by our design team. We designed new steam chambers for two sizes of helmets as part of the engineering scope. Input of EPS bead was PLC driven to ensure regular cycle timing. A rigorous testing procedure that included batch testing was put in place to enable compliance to multiple Safety Standards including ANSI and NZ Standards.
Graphic design included point of sale brochures, helmet graphics for a numbers of designs and helmet colours, Axis branding and card packaging for the presentation of the helmet itself. For the Axis brand, a strong logotype was developed that could be clearly read on the side of a helmet. Website design was completed for access by distributors in New Zealand and Australia.
